چکیده

The present talk is similar to one at COSMO-98 last month. As is well explained in standard reviews of the cosmological constant [1, 2] the theoretical expectation for Λ exceeds its observational value by 120 orders of magnitude. In 1917, Einstein looked for a static solution of general relativity for cosmology and added a new λ term:

We begin a program of work aimed at examining the interior of a rotating black hole with a non–zero cosmological constant. The generalisation of Teukolsky’s equation for the radial mode functions is presented. It is shown that the energy fluxes of scalar, electromagnetic and gravity waves are regular at the Cauchy horizon whenever the surface gravity there is less than the surface gravity at th...

The cosmological constant problem is examined under the assumption that the extrinsic curvature of the space-time contributes to the vacuum. A compensation mechanism based on a variable cosmological term is proposed. Under a suitable hypothesis on the behavior of the extrinsic curvature, we find that an initially large Λ(t) rolls down rapidly to zero during the early stages of the universe. Usi...

We present explicit expressions for the calculation of cosmological look back time, for zero cosmological constant and arbitrary density parameter Ω, which, in the limit as redshift becomes infinite, give the age of the universe. The case for non-zero cosmological constant is most easily solved via numerical integration. The most distant objects presently known (approaching redshift z = 5) have...

We consider the modification of Newton's gravity law in Dolgov's higher spin models [1, 2] designed to compensate the cosmological constant. We find that the effective Planck mass is unacceptably large in these models. We also point out that the properties of gravitational waves are entirely different in these models as compared to general relativity.

Fundamental theories of quantum gravity such as supergravity include a four form field strength which contributes to the cosmological constant. The inclusion of such a field into our theory of open inflation [1] allows an anthropic solution to the cosmological constant problem in which cosmological constant gives a small but non-negligible contribution to the density of today's universe. We inc...
